Setting SMART Goals: Your Ticket to Real Change
by Emily Nichols | 19th Dec 2025 | Hethel Innovation
Let’s face it, everyone’s set a goal they forget two weeks later. “This year I’ll be more organized!” Suddenly, it’s June and your closet’s still a disaster. If you want your goals to stick (and maybe brag about your progress), the SMART framework is your new best friend.
What Does “SMART” Really Mean?
SMART isn’t just some business buzzword, it’s a goal-setting secret weapon used by successful people everywhere. It means your goals are:
Specific: Super clear, no mystery allowed.
Measurable: Progress you can see and celebrate.
Achievable: Ambitious, but won’t leave you crying in frustration.
Relevant: Actually matters to you (not just what your neighbor thinks is cool).
Time-Bound: Has a real finish line, no “someday” nonsense.
Breaking Down the SMART Formula
1. Specific
Get to the point. Not Specific: “I want to get fit.”
Super Specific: “I want to run a 5K in my city’s fun run this September.”
Think “who, what, where, why,” not “maybe, kinda, possibly.”
2. Measurable
If you can’t measure it, did it even happen?
Track your progress: “I’ll run three times a week and log my distance.”
Build in mini victories so you can high-five yourself along the way.
3. Achievable
Challenge yourself, but don’t aim for superhero status (unless you have a cape).
Small steps = big change. “Marathon next month?” Maybe not. “5K with friends?” Now we’re talking.
4. Relevant
Make sure your goal matters to you. Your motivation = your momentum.
Ask, “Does this help me be who I want to be?” If yes, go for it!
5. Time-Bound
Deadlines aren’t just for homework—they’re for dreams, too!
Attach a date: “I’ll run the 5K by the end of September.”
No more “I’ll get around to it… eventually.”
From Wish to WOW: How to Write SMART Goals
Try this template, make it your own and say it out loud (bonus points if you do it in the mirror):
“I will [what you’ll do], by [when], and track my progress by [method]. It’s important to me because [reason].”
Example Makeovers
Old Goal: “I want to read more.”
SMART Goal: “I’ll read one new book per month by picking them out with a friend, and mark each finished book on my calendar.”
Old Goal: “I should exercise.”
SMART Goal: “I’ll walk for 20 minutes every weekday after breakfast until the end of the school year, tracking my steps on my watch.”
Old Goal: “I wish I earned more sales.”
SMART Goal: “I’ll increase monthly sales by 15% over the next 3 months by calling 5 new leads a week and reviewing my progress every Friday.”
Why Bother? The Real Perks of SMART Goals
You’ll feel like a rockstar, progress is deliciously motivating.
You know when you’ve arrived. No more goal limbo!
You actually get things done. Yes, really.
SMART goals make you the hero of your own story. So next time you make a promise to yourself, give it some personality, make it SMART, watch your confidence rise, and enjoy those high-fives (from others and yourself).
Ready, set, goal!
